Captur E-Tech Hybrid introduced in June 2021, joining Renault’s expanding range of electrified models.

AT A GLANCE

EXTERIOR

The Captur has a commanding, dynamic presence on the road with strong SUV identity. The totally redesigned exterior is more modern and expressive, yet it remains true to Renault’s core design values with chunky protective mouldings, pronounced wheel arch extensions and a high waistline.

Beneath a wide front grille and prominent Renault emblem, the Captur’s front bumper incorporates two wide air deflectors which contribute to its assertive character. These are also functional elements, being specially designed to channel air at speed to improve aerodynamic performance and thereby reduce fuel consumption.

The deeply scalloped sides and floating roof continue the design themes of its predecessor, yet there’s an enhanced dynamism thanks to the increased wheelbase and more pronounced slope of the roof.

At the rear, the flush-fitting tailgate is flanked by slim tail lights with C-shaped light signatures proudly identifying Captur as one of the new generation of Renault cars. Their bold design accentuates the car’s width, with pronounced 3D elements inside the lenses creating a crisp, technical look.

Full-LED headlamps are standard across the range, giving the Captur a distinctive presence and providing the driver with optimum illumination at night. These powerful headlights are seamlessly integrated into the design, with chrome elements that appear to flow into the front grille combined with the C-shaped daytime running light signature.

Personalisation has always been a big part of Captur’s appeal, with a broad choice of 8 body colours with a contrasting black roof option. Captur E-Tech Hybrid models are also marked out by E-Tech badging on bootlid.

INTERIOR

The interior of the Captur continues the design revolution started by the latest Clio, setting a new standard for sophistication in the compact SUV class with enhanced material quality and practicality. The design delivers the kind of style and refinement that is unrivalled in the sector, with the strong horizontal emphasis of the dashboard emphasising the car’s width.

At its centre is a hub which brings intuitive cutting-edge innovation and technology, featuring Renault’s ‘Smart Cockpit’ layout with a responsive infotainment screen angled towards the driver. A seven-inch multimedia screen is standard on Iconic and S Edition models, while R.S. Line versions gets a 9.3-inch portrait format.

Both give access to Renault’s EASY LINK connected system, bringing together infotainment and MULTI-SENSE functions, which alter selected elements based on driving modes for optimum ease-of-use on the move. Also included is an ambient lighting pack that allows drivers to choose from eight different LED colours that bathe the interior in a calming glow. The EASY LINK screens complement a configurable driver information display in the instrument panel.

The premium feel is enhanced by carefully selected materials and considered design elements. Soft-touch plastics and satin finishes are used throughout, while the front seats have an entirely new architecture providing the kind of comfort and support more often associated with cars from higher segments.

One of the highlights of the interior is the ‘flying console’. This elevated centre console emphasises the Captur’s sophisticated yet practical character, with a futuristic ‘E-Shifter’ gear selector on top and additional storage space. An E-Tech badge on the centre console also marks out the E-Tech Hybrid models.

Practicality – always a core strength of the Captur – has been raised to an even higher level. The rear seat base can slide to optimise rear legroom and boot space, which has been boosted in capacity to a maximum of 440 litres in the E-Tech Hybrid version. The rear seat backs can be folded in a 1/3 or 2/3 configuration to suit different needs, and fold down completely to give an almost completely flat load floor of 1.57m.

In addition, a movable floor allows the boot space to be configured either for maximum space or to create a totally flat load entrance with hidden storage under the floor.

POWERTRAIN AND DRIVING

Adding a further electrified version to the Captur range was a simple process due to the model being based on the versatile CMF-B modular architecture, which was designed from the start to accept electric capabilities.

The All-New Captur E-Tech Hybrid uses the same technology that debuted on the Clio E-Tech Hybrid, which was engineered with input from the Alpine Formula One team. It combines a 1.6-litre petrol engine with a 1.2 kWh lithium-ion battery and two electric motors, together with the automatic, multi-mode dog gearbox that features in all other Renault E-Tech models.

In operation, it starts the vehicle in 100 per cent electric mode, significantly reducing the gap in acceleration during gear changes. This means a smoother, more refined drive plus better performance.

The hybrid powertrain allows significant reductions in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. It is designed to use the optimal energy output to recharge the battery whenever the energy created is more than the required power.

Then, kinetic energy recovered during deceleration or braking can be transformed into electrical energy to recharge the battery. The electrical energy is then in reserve to assist with acceleration, or for all-electric operation at lower speeds in urban areas, later in a journey.

The Captur’s hybrid powertrain offers three levels of energy regeneration and regenerative braking:

Battery regeneration during deceleration: When the driver lifts their foot off the accelerator and the gear selector is in D (Drive), the main electric motor works as a generator by recovering kinetic energy produced by the deceleration, turning it into electrical energy that is sent back to the battery.

B Mode: To recover more energy, the gear selector can be put into B (Brake) mode by nudging the gear selector backwards, allowing one pedal driving when driving in full electric mode, increasing the level of regeneration allowed by the battery, up to an idling speed of around 4mph.

Regenerative braking: When the brake pedal is depressed, braking is triggered electrically, with mechanical braking support from the brake pads if necessary. The electric motor provides additional braking here, recovering excess energy and returning it to the battery that can be deployed again later on.

The All-New Captur E-Tech Hybrid generates 145hp delivering a zero to 62mph time of 10.6 seconds and a maximum speed of 106mph. After the E-Tech Plug-in Hybrid, it is the most powerful Captur available. It blends this responsive performance with efficiency, emitting as little as 113g/km CO2 and delivering fuel economy of up to 56.5mpg.

The All-New Captur E-Tech Hybrid features MULTI-SENSE driving mode selection on S Edition and R.S Line. This sees the powertrain automatically adapt to the driving conditions and the way in which it is being driven – managing its power supply accordingly, as well as the battery regeneration opportunities.

The change from one mode to another is barely noticeable and requires no input from the driver – the E-Tech powertrain automatically decides the most appropriate mode for the situation to optimise efficiency and emissions, while continuing to deliver responsive and enjoyable driving. The following modes are available:

MySense: The standard driving mode, MySense automatically adapts the hybrid powertrain to the driver’s inputs and driving conditions, operating in the most efficient and suitable way necessary for the situation by intelligently switching between electric power and the engine.

Eco: Eco uses a more measured mapping of the accelerator pedal and adapted gear changing for the most economical drive

Sport: Sport makes use of the powertrain’s full potential, engaging the petrol engine and both electric motors for the most responsive drive when the accelerator pedal is fully depressed.

TECHNOLOGY

The Captur uses technology to enrich the ownership experience, offering a range of digital and connected features that allow users to do more, more easily. Every model comes with Renault’s latest EASY LINK multimedia system, which groups useful functions, apps and services together. Access is via a responsive, centrally mounted touchscreen that’s within easy reach of both the driver and front seat passenger. E-Tech Hybrid Iconic and S Edition models have a landscape-format 7.0-inch screen, while R.S. Line models have a portrait 9.3-inch example which is among the largest screens in the class. In both versions, the screen’s smartphone-inspired interface feels familiar and intuitive.

Clear graphics make it easy to view information at a glance, while pinch and swipe functionality ensures quick, simple operation on the move. Users can customise screens, creating shortcuts that allow them to directly access their favourite features. A selection of functions can also be activated by voice control, allowing the driver to simply speak instructions while keeping their hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road.

EASY LINK functionality makes life easier by integrating the digital worlds of the driver and passengers into the car. Connected services and apps (including Android Aut and Apple CarPlay integration as standard across the range) can be accessed in one place, while the availability of remote vehicle management and more precise and easily configurable sat-nav routes reduces hassle and saves time.

Always-on 4G connectivity supports services such as an emergency call function that activates automatically in the event of an accident. It also means that the platform is always up to date, thanks to automatic updates from partners such as Google, TomTom and Coyote. In addition, the navigation system includes real-time information from TomTom about heavy traffic or potential danger ahead, as well new functions such as the ability to search for addresses using Google Places.

The Captur E-TECH Hybird also provides precise 3D sat-nav mapping for even clearer route-finding. On S Edition models it also works in conjunction with the 7.0-inch TFT driver information display to feature turn-by-turn sat-nav directions directly into the eye line of the driver, for optimum convenience and safety.

Innovative MULTI-SENSE technology allows the driver to personalise their driving experience to match their mood, or their journey, by selecting from three modes – Eco, Sport and MySense, which allows the driver to adjust settings to their preference. There’s also a dedicated EV button for E-Tech hybrid models to engage pure electric driving, providing there’s enough battery charge.

As well as changing the car’s engine and steering response, each one adjusts the interior ambience to match by activating different lighting themes. There are eight light colour options to choose from, with each one subtly changing the mood of the interior.
